Historikeren Christopher Dawson.

Christopher Dawson (1880-1970) var en historiker som gikk mot strømmen. I en tid da de fleste anså religion som noe med svinnende relevans for samfunnet og dets utvikling, hevded Dawson at religion lå i hjertet av kulturen og var uløselig knyttet til den. Dawson var en visjonær historiker, og er blitt sammenlignet med Spengler og Toynbee. Dawson konkluderte med at den vestlige sivilisasjon måtte finne tilbake til sine åndelige røtter og revitalisere kristendommen, eller oppleve å miste sin kultur. Mange av Christopher Dawsons tanker er i dag mer aktuelle en noen gang og fortjener oppmerskomhet I boken Progress and Religion konkludere han med følgende:

"We are only just beginning to understand how intimately and profoundly the vitality of a society is bound up with its religion. It is the religious impulse which supplies the cohesive force which unifies a society and a culture. The great sivilizations of the world do not produce the great religions as a kind of cultural by-product; in a very real sense the great religions are the foundations on which the great civilizations rest. A society which has lost its religion becomes sooner or later a society which has lost its culture."
